I found this article while browsing delicious.com. I'm not quite sure what to think of it.

The author recognizes that it is potentially problematic: To draw any more parallels would be to invite controversy—and perhaps equating those with ASD with fictitious aliens is not the best of PR campaigns.

Autistic Trekdom

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and discussion.

Shared trait keeps teens' friendship going strong
By JESSE TRUESDALE - The Hutchinson News - Friday, May. 15, 2009

BUHLER, Kan. -- Estin Talavera and Matthew Van Sickler have been friends since second grade. They share some common interests, including online games and listening to music. But the two Buhler High School seniors share a more fundamental trait.

"Both of us don't get nonverbal cues," Estin said, referring to what many people call body language.

In Estin's case it's because he's blind. In Matthew's, it's because of Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

Hello. I'm Al. I was diagnosed in childhood. I'm semi-independent in the quieter suburbs near Chicago. I am interested in the Middle Ages, and animals, especially rats and enjoy painting and other art forms.

Welcome!

Oh wow, there's already members here and I haven't even promoted the comm yet. Well, hello there! Please take another look at the community Info Page since the info there may have changed; feed back is welcomed.

It would be great if you could make a post introducing yourself to the group (eg: how the autism spectrum affects you, what part of the world you are in, some of your hobbies, etc.).

I'm also looking for some help with the following...

  • An icon for the community. While the comm will just need one, I'd like to see as many submitted as possible so that they can be posted together for anyone to use.

  • Resource list suggestions: I'd like to have some quality links on the comm info page, and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the massive number of bookmarks I have.

  • Suggestions on comms on DW where posting a notice for a new comm like this would be welcomed (also feel free to post a link here yourself in your journal or in comms (check that it is permitted first of course))
